On this episode, our correspondent, Emily Rendell-Watson, speaks with Lloyd Cardinal: Co-Chair of EndPovertyEdmonton’s Indigenous Circle and this year’s Vital Signs Advisory Committee.

Edmonton’s Vital Signs is an annual check-up that measures how the community is doing. This year’s report delves into topics including the history of racism in Edmonton and the ways that systemic racism affects housing, safety, health, education, civic engagement, and more.

Although the report is rich with data, it also reveals that the unique experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour are often not considered in research studies. For instance, the report identifies that there is a lack of race-based data within the 2SLGBTQ+ population, which makes the challenges they face invisible.

Emily sat down with Lloyd to hear about his experience on the committee. And to understand his perspective of what this data, or lack of data, can look like in everyday life.

On this episode, we look at how bias in data gathering can impact representation of communities. Our correspondent, Emily Rendell-Watson, speaks with three incredible community members with experience in data research, urban planning and activism.

ECF has been exploring the history of racism in this year’s Vital Signs topic. Vital Signs is a check-up to see how the community is fairing on various issues. This work is done in collaboration with Edmonton Social Planning Council and with guidance from a dedicated committee made of people with lived experience.

Through this work, the Committee working on this project learned that there are still many people and communities who are not included in a meaningful way through typical data gathering processes.  These gaps can leave people feeling unheard and unseen.

On this episode, we scratch the surface of Edmonton’s history with racism: a huge topic that impacts many communities, each in unique ways. Our correspondent Emily Rendell-Watson explores this topic with Dr. Bukola Salami, Dr. Yvonne Chiu and Nneka Otogbolu.

The history of racism in Edmonton is the focus of our latest Vital Topic. It isn’t possible to tell the whole story of this history in just an episode, or a single Vital Signs report. But we want to bring attention to a few aspects of this history, with the understanding that there is still more for us to learn.  With help from our Vital Signs Advisory Committee, community members and stakeholders, we are continuing to reflect and find new ways to approach our annual Vital Signs report.
